World Vitiligo Day 2026

The Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Khaja Bandanawaz University, Kalaburagi, observed World Vitiligo Day on 29th June 2026 at KBNTGH, Kalaburagi, with the objective of creating awareness about vitiligo, dispelling misconceptions, and promoting acceptance of individuals living with the condition.
The programme was graced by Dr. Syed Ashfaq Ahmed, Hon'ble Pro Vice Chancellor, KBNU, who addressed the gathering and emphasized the importance of public awareness, early consultation, and eliminating the social stigma associated with vitiligo. Dr. Guruprasad K.Y., Dean, FOMS, KBNU, also addressed the audience and highlighted the need for timely diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and compassionate care for patients with vitiligo. The programme was also attended by Dr. SiddlingChengty, Medical Superintendent, and Dr. Radhika, Administrator, FOMS, KBNU. The event was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Mohammed Waseem Javed, Associate Professor and I/C Head of the Department, and was attended by faculty members, postgraduate students, interns, patients, and members of the general public.
An awareness lecture on World Vitiligo Day was delivered by Dr. Someshwari Gachinmath, Postgraduate Resident, on the theme "From Stigma to Strength". The talk focused on the causes of vitiligo, available treatment modalities, psychological impact of the disease, and the importance of community support in improving the quality of life of affected individuals.
To encourage awareness and active participation among students, Painting and Essay Competitions were organized. The participants creatively expressed the message of equality, inclusion, and support for people living with vitiligo. The competitions served as an effective medium for spreading awareness and addressing the myths surrounding the disease.
Faculty members and postgraduate residents also interacted with patients and the general public, educating them that vitiligo is a non-contagious autoimmune skin disorder, not caused by infection or poor hygiene. The session emphasized early medical consultation, adherence to treatment, and the importance of eliminating discrimination and social stigma.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Safura Shireen, Postgraduate Resident. Subsequently, prizes were distributed to the winners of the Painting and Essay Competitions by the dignitaries in recognition of their enthusiastic participation and creative contributions. The event ended with a renewed commitment to promote awareness, acceptance, and compassionate care for individuals living with vitiligo.
