WORLD TUBERCULOSIS DAY 2026 – “Yes! We can end TB”
World Tuberculosis Day is observed annually on March 24 to raise awareness about tuberculosis (TB), a contagious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The theme for 2026, 'Yes! We can end TB – Led by Countries, Powered by People,' emphasizes global commitment and community participation in eliminating TB. Despite advances in medicine, TB remains a major public health challenge. Early diagnosis, proper treatment, and awareness are key to controlling its spread.
The Department of General Medicine organized this awareness programme to educate healthcare professionals, patients, and the public about prevention, early detection, treatment adherence, and the importance of combating drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB).
The programme was hosted by Dr. Sunil, Final Year Postgraduate, Department of General Medicine. A large gathering of faculty, postgraduates, interns, patients, and the general public assembled in the lobby of the Department of General Medicine.
The event was graced by dignitaries including Dean Dr. Guruprasad K. Y., Medical Superintendent Dr. Siddaling Chengty, professor emeritus senior CEO Dr. P. S. Shankar, Dr. Chandrakala(professor), Dr. Mohammad Abdul Waheed(prof & HOD general medicine) , and Dr. Girish Ronad along with other faculty members.
The guest lecture was delivered by Dr. Gousuddin Arif, Consultant Pulmonologist, on the management of tuberculosis. He also spoke about multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), emphasizing early diagnosis, timely treatment, and adherence to therapy. He highlighted important protective measures for both doctors and the public.
Felicitation of dignitaries was carried out by the faculty of the Department of General Medicine. Felicitation of the guest speaker Dr. Gousuddin Arif was done by the Dean and other dignitaries. A symbolic watering of the plant was performed by the dignitaries, representing environmental conservation.
Dr. P. S. Shankar, Senior CEO, and Dr. Guruprasad K. Y., Dean, addressed the audience by sharing their valuable experiences and insights. The presidential address by Dr. Guruprasad highlighted the discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and its significance. Dr. P. S. Shankar shared his vast clinical expertise and experience in tuberculosis management. Dr. Siddaling Chengty congratulated the department and emphasized awareness and timely treatment.
A student skit was performed by postgraduates and interns, effectively highlighting the importance of public awareness, early detection, and treatment compliance in controlling tuberculosis.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Girish Ronad, Professor, Department of General Medicine.
The event reinforced the importance of community participation and collective responsibility in achieving TB elimination.
