World Suicide Prevention Day 2025

The Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medical Sciences (FOMS), Khaja Bandanawaz University (KBNU), observed World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September 2025 at the Lecture Hall, 3rd Floor, KBN Teaching and General Hospital, Kalaburagi. The programme aimed to raise awareness about mental health, reduce the stigma surrounding suicide, and promote early help-seeking behaviour among students and staff.
The event was graced by Dr. Guruprasad K.Y., Dean, Faculty of Medical Sciences; Dr. Siddaling Chengty, Professor of Paediatrics and Medical Superintendent, KBNTGH; and Dr. Radhika R., Administrator and Assistant Registrar, KBNTGH, as Chief Guests.
The programme began with a welcome address by Dr. Syeda Sadiya, Intern, Department of Psychiatry. This was followed by a plant-watering ceremony symbolising growth, hope, and the nurturing of positive mental health.
In their addresses, the Chief Guests shared insightful perspectives on suicide prevention, emphasising the need to address the stigma associated with mental health issues and encouraging collective efforts to build a supportive environment. They highlighted the role of healthcare professionals in identifying warning signs early and offering compassionate support to those in distress.
A special lecture was delivered by Dr. Abdul Rafe Muqtadeer Baig, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, on “Suicide and its Prevention.” He spoke about early identification of risk factors, timely intervention strategies, and the importance of empathy and open conversations in saving lives. His address underlined the critical role medical students and faculty play in promoting mental well-being within the community.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Supriya Yedve, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from 100 attendees, including faculty members and students. The interactive session created an environment of openness and learning, reinforcing the message that suicide prevention is a shared responsibility.
By observing World Suicide Prevention Day, KBNU reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a campus culture where mental health is prioritised, stigma is challenged, and every life is valued.
