The Department of General Medicine at Khaja Bandanawaz University commemorated World Environment Day with a thought-provoking academic session titled “Environmental Effects on Diabetes and Hypertension”. Held on 26th June 2025, the event brought together medical professionals, students, and university leadership to reflect on the growing impact of environmental factors on health—particularly in the context of endocrine and metabolic disorders.

The program was organized under the leadership of Dr. Chandrakala, Professor and Head of the Department, and witnessed the presence of esteemed dignitaries including Dr. Guruprasad K Y, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences; Dr. P.S. Shankar, Senior CEO of FOMS; Dr. Siddaling Chengty, Medical Superintendent of KBNTGH; Dr. Ravikumar Rayka, Consultant Diabetologist and Endocrinologist; and Dr. Radhika Prasad, Administrator of KBNTGH.

The session began with a warm welcome by Dr. Sunil Reddy, followed by opening remarks from Dr. Chandrakala, who introduced the theme and its relevance in contemporary medicine. Dr. P.S. Shankar addressed the gathering with insightful commentary on how modern lifestyles and environmental degradation are silent contributors to public health challenges. His address set the tone for a deeper scientific discussion that followed.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Ravikumar Rayka, delivered a compelling lecture on how air and water pollution, coupled with dietary and behavioral shifts, are disrupting hormonal functions and leading to a rise in lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. His presentation explored the complex interplay between environmental toxins and the human endocrine system, calling for increased awareness, early intervention, and public health advocacy. He emphasized that physicians must go beyond treatment and actively participate in environmental education to prevent disease at its root.

The session concluded with an engaging interaction between faculty, students, and the speakers, fostering a dynamic dialogue around integrative healthcare and environmental stewardship. The event successfully highlighted that environmental health is inseparable from public health and reinforced the department’s ongoing commitment to holistic, responsible medical education.

Through this observance of World Environment Day, the Department of General Medicine at Khaja Bandanawaz University reaffirmed its role not just as a center of clinical excellence, but also as a platform for promoting ecological consciousness and sustainable well-being.
