World AIDS Day is observed every year on 1 December to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, promote preventive practices, and support people living with HIV (PLHIV). In line with this global initiative, the Department of Community Medicine, KBN University, organized a community-oriented World AIDS Day 2025 programme comprising an awareness activity in the Urban Field Practice Area on 01 December 2025 and an awareness lecture at the Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC), Khaja Bazaar, on 04 December 2025.
The key objectives of the programme were to increase public awareness regarding HIV transmission, prevention and management; highlight the importance of early testing and treatment; reduce myths and stigma; and encourage community participation in HIV prevention efforts.
At UHTC, an interactive health awareness lecture was delivered by interns of the Department of Community Medicine, Dr. Mubashera and Dr. Sadiya, under faculty guidance. The session covered basic facts about HIV and AIDS, modes of transmission, correct and consistent use of preventive measures, the significance of HIV testing and counseling, and the vital role of Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) in improving quality of life. The speakers also discussed the government programmes and services available for PLHIV. Charts, posters and other visual aids were used to make complex concepts accessible to the lay audience and to address myths and misconceptions in a simple manner.
In parallel, a structured door-to-door outreach activity was conducted in Khaja Bazaar and surrounding areas. Staff members, field workers (MSW, PHN), interns and students visited households and local shops, distributing IEC materials and pamphlets on HIV prevention, safe practices and the importance of non-discriminatory attitudes. This direct engagement allowed the team to clarify doubts, counter stigma, and motivate individuals to seek testing and medical advice when needed.
The World AIDS Day programme at the Urban Field Practice Area and UHTC successfully met its objectives of educating and sensitizing the community about HIV/AIDS. It reinforced the importance of awareness, prevention and early treatment while promoting an inclusive and supportive environment for people living with HIV. The Department of Community Medicine and KBN University remain committed to continuing such community-based initiatives as part of their broader mission to advance public health, social responsibility and holistic community well-being.
