Shakespeare Day 2026

The Department of English, Faculty of Languages, Khaja Bandanawaz University, organized “Shakespeare day” on 29 April, 2026 from 12 PM to 1:30 PM. The event was organized to honour William Shakespeare, one of the greatest literary figures in the English literature. The legacy of Shakespeare is unmatched, timeless and quite relevant across the history of English literature. The Anchoring of the event was carried out by Roshan Deeba, Research Scholar, Department of English. Dr. Athiya Sultana, HoD, Department of English, gave the welcome speech and also introduced the event. Gousiya Begum, Research Scholar, Department of English, portrayed the relevance of Shakespeare in present period humorously. Farzana, Research Scholar, Department of English, explored the Shakespearean women who broke the rules. Syeda Hufza Umama, M.A. Student, Department of English, spoke about the timeless human emotions in connection to Shakespearean writings. Syed Mudabber Nawaz, Guest Faculty, Department of English, addressed the students and spoke about the contemporary reading of literary texts. Yasmeen Begum, M.A. Student, Department of English, highlighted the important works of Shakespeare. Arshiya Begum, M.A. Student, Department of English, delivered a monologue of Shakespeare’s Play, Julies Cesar followed by Syeda Zohra Batool, M.A. Student, Department of English, who delivered the monologue of Shakespeare’s Play,As You Like it. Dr. Sanganagouda, Guest Faculty, Department of Kannada, highlighted the contributions and contemporary relevance of Shakespearean plays in Kanada Language. Mashak Patel, Research Scholar, Department of Hindi, spoke about important contributions of Shakespeare in Hindi Language. Nafsiya Khanum, M.A. Student, Department of English, spoke about the famous Shakespearean characters and their teachings. Muzalfa, M.A. Student, Department of Urdu, highlighted the impact of Shakespearean plays on Urdu literature.
The Presidential address was delivered by Prof. Nishat Arif Hussaini, Dean, Faculty of Languages, Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Law, Khaja Bandanawaz University. She explored the characters and language in the works of William Shakespeare. The speaker drew particular attention to the complexity of major characters, with special emphasis on Iago, often regarded as one of Shakespeare’s most intriguing and formidable villains. Iago’s manipulative intellect, psychological depth, and calculated use of deception were discussed in detail, highlighting how he drives the tragic action forward.
In addition to character analysis, the speaker thoughtfully examined Shakespeare’s language—its richness, poetic intensity, and dramatic effectiveness. The discussion illuminated how language not only shapes character but also deepens themes of jealousy, betrayal, and power. Overall, the presentation offered valuable insights into Shakespeare’s enduring brilliance, leaving the audience with a deeper appreciation of his artistry and timeless relevance.
A quiz competition about the contributions and legacy of Shakespeare was organized as a part of the event. The prize distribution was announced by Ramesh N, Assistant Professor, Department of English. The prizes were distributed by the Dean, Prof. Nishat Arif Hussaini, to the winning team. The winners of the quiz competition were Syead Hufza Umama, Yasmeen Begum and Zaiba Samreen, the students of the Department of English. The event was concluded with the vote of thanks which was delivered by Raheemunnisa, M.A. Student, Department of English. The event was a successful celebration of the timeless contributions and longstanding legacy of William Shakespeare.
