The Department of Community Medicine, Faculty of Medical Sciences, KBN University, organized a National Road Safety Month-2026 awareness program on 31/01/2026 from 02:00 PM to 05:00 PM at Hagargah Cross, Ring Road, Kalaburagi. The program was conducted in collaboration with Karnul Multispecialty Hospital under the guidance of FOMS Dean Dr. Guruprasad K Y with the objective of educating the public about the importance of road safety, reducing accidents, and promoting responsible behavior among drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. The initiative formed part of the nationwide observance of National Road Safety Month to enhance public awareness and reduce road traffic fatalities.

The key objectives included educating the public on traffic rules and regulations; highlighting the dangers of speeding, drunk driving, distracted driving, and non-use of helmets and seat belts; promoting pedestrian safety and safe crossing practices; encouraging the use of protective gear; providing information on traffic laws and penalties; and collaborating with local authorities and institutions to strengthen road safety awareness. The program targeted daily commuters, pedestrians, students, and local residents.

MBBS Phase-III students, interns, and Community Medicine staff participated actively. Initially, participants assembled at the Open Amphitheatre of the KBNU campus. The event began with the welcome of dignitaries, followed by an inaugural address. Dr. M. A. Baseer (Professor and Head, Department of Surgery, FOMS, KBN University) delivered a lecture on first aid for abdominal and skin injuries in road traffic accidents. This was followed by expert talks on first aid for head and spine injuries by Dr. Adil Ahmed (Consultant Neurosurgeon, Karnul Multispecialty Hospital) and Dr. Vinay Sagar Sharma (Consultant Neurosurgeon and Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery, FOMS, KBN University). Dr. Shahnaz Shaheen and Dr. M. A. Fahim briefed the students regarding planned awareness activities. Dr. M. A. Baseer formally inaugurated the program by waving the green flag and emphasized the role of young medical professionals in promoting road safety.

Participants conducted a rally from the KBNU campus to Khaja Colony carrying charts and placards with road safety slogans. At Hagargah Cross, activities included helmet and seat-belt checking with support from traffic police, display of posters and placards to commuters, traffic management assistance, and on-site awareness talks. After the program, posters and placards were handed over to the traffic police for continued awareness efforts. The traffic police appreciated the initiative and encouraged similar programs in the future. The program concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. Sayyad Tajmul.

A total of 135 participants attended the event, including 13 faculty members, 108 MBBS Phase-III students, 6 Community Medicine interns, and 8 external participants (including traffic police and guest experts). Students prepared educational charts under faculty guidance and actively engaged in community awareness activities.
