National Librarian’s Day - 2026

National Librarian’s Day was celebrated at the Central Library, Khaja Bandanawaz University (KBN University), Kalaburagi, on 12 August 2026, commemorating the 136th Birth Anniversary of Padma Shri Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, widely regarded as the Father of Indian Library Science. The programme was organized to highlight the importance of libraries in promoting knowledge, learning, research, and the free accessibility of information to students, research scholars, teaching faculty, and the academic community.


The programme commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Syed Khazi Ahmed Ansar, Section Officer, FOMS, KBN University. This was followed by the dignitaries garlanding the portrait of Padma Shri Dr. S. R. Ranganathan. His remarkable contributions to library science and his vision of making knowledge accessible to all continue to inspire librarians, educators, researchers, and students across India and internationally.


A warm welcome address was delivered by Dr. Syed Shah Ahmed Sarmast, Assistant Librarian, KBN University, who welcomed the dignitaries and participants and outlined the significance of National Librarian’s Day.


Dr. P. S. Kattimani, University Librarian, Central University of Karnataka, attended the programme as the Guest Speaker. In his address, he spoke about the life and contributions of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan. He explained that Dr. Ranganathan began his career as a mathematician and professor at the University of Madras during the British period and later went to England for professional training in library science. During his career, he visited several libraries in the United Kingdom and the United States and contributed extensively to library science through his research and publications. He also highlighted the continued relevance of Ranganathan’s Five Laws of Library Science in the modern library and information environment.


Dr. Guruprasad K. Y., Dean, FOMS, addressed the gathering and emphasized the importance of libraries and their documentary resources in academic and research activities.

The Presidential Remarks were delivered by Professor Ashfaq Ahmed, Hon’ble Pro-Vice Chancellor, KBN University. He emphasized the importance of utilizing the library resources available to students, research scholars, and faculty members. He encouraged the gathering to make maximum use of the documents and scholarly resources available in the KBN University Central Library. He also stressed the importance of evaluating information carefully and relying on authentic and authoritative sources while using digital platforms, including AI tools and search engines.


The programme was attended by Dr. Subhash Komal, Dean, FOET; Dr. Srinivas Rao, Dean, FCM; Dr. Iqbal Mattu, Dean, FOE; Dr. Sidesh Sirwar, Head, Department of Microbiology; Dr. Bila, Coordinator, NMC; Dr. Maroof, Assistant Dean, Student Welfare; teaching faculty members; library staff; research scholars; and students.


The Master of Ceremony, Sujatha Sone, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Commerce and Management, effectively conducted the programme. The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Mohammed Younus Ali, Senior Executive Assistant, FOMS, KBN University, who expressed his gratitude to the dignitaries, faculty members, library staff, research scholars, students, and everyone who contributed to the successful organization of the event.


The celebration served as a meaningful reminder of the enduring legacy of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan and the vital role of libraries in supporting teaching, learning, research, and the dissemination of authentic knowledge in the digital age.
