The Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Sciences, Khaja Bandanawaz University (KBNU), Kalaburagi, celebrated International Microorganisms Day 2026 on 17th September 2026, bringing the fascinating world of microorganisms beyond the classroom through an expert talk and an innovative student model exhibition. The celebration highlighted how microscopic organisms make a remarkable contribution to human health, food, agriculture, biotechnology and environmental sustainability.

The programme was presided over by Prof. Syed Ashfaq Ahmed, Pro-Vice Chancellor, KBN University and Dean, Faculty of Sciences, while Dr. Dayanand Agsar, Former Vice Chancellor, Gulbarga University and Chief Executive Director, Ecoink Organics Pvt. Ltd., Kalaburagi, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. The event began with a meaningful green initiative - watering plants. Dr. Geetanjali R. Kamble welcomed the gathering, Dr. Neelam Mishra introduced the guests, and Dr. Jahan Aara Kudsi proposed the vote of thanks.

A key attraction was the invited talk by Dr. Dayanand Agsar on “Tiny Organisms: Big Impact – Microbes for a Sustainable Future.” He introduced students to the immense potential of the microbial world through his actinobacterial research and highlighted applications in medicine, biofertilizers, bioremediation, wastewater treatment and bioenergy, emphasizing how microorganisms can contribute to a healthier and more sustainable future.

Adding creativity and scientific enthusiasm to the celebration, a student model exhibition and competition was organized under two thematic zones - “From Fermentation to Future Medicine” and “From Sustainable Agriculture to a Cleaner Environment.” B.Sc. and M.Sc. Biotechnology students transformed scientific concepts into engaging models showcasing the practical applications of microorganisms.

Dr. Asma Farheen, Department of Microbiology, Gulbarga University served as the judge for the model-making competition. The best models were selected from both zones, and the first, second and third prize winners were awarded cash prizes. The winning exhibits explored exciting topics including recombinant insulin production using E. coli, bacteriocin-producing bacteria, the microbiome, microbial fuel cells, plastic-eating bacteria and microbial wastewater treatment.

The celebration successfully blended science, creativity and sustainability, providing students with an opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world microbial applications while strengthening teamwork and scientific communication. The event was successfully organized by Dr. Geetanjali Kamble, Dr. Jahan Aara Kudsi, Dr. Neelam Mishra, Dr. Badarinath Kulkarni and Dr. M.A. Mujeeb of the Department of Biotechnology.
