International Day of Older Persons 2026
To commemorate International Day of Older Persons 2026, Department of Community Medicine and General Medicine, Faculty of Medical Sciences, KBN University jointly organized a community-oriented Program based on the theme “Ageing with Dignity: Strengthening Care and Support System.” in UHTC, Khaja Bazaar, UHTC Field Practice Area and Mahadevi Old Age Home, Taj-Sultanpur, kalaburagi on 01/10/2026. The program focused on promoting healthy ageing, creating awareness regarding the health and social needs of older persons, and strengthening community support systems for their well-being.
A series of activities, including awareness and sensitization, free geriatric health check-up, free hypertension and diabetes mellitus screening, Free Medicines and fruits distribution, were conducted as part of the Program.
Awareness and Sensitization Program: The Program commenced with an awareness and sensitization session focusing on the theme “Ageing with Dignity: Strengthening Care and Support System.” The participants were sensitized about the importance of respecting and supporting older persons and recognizing their rights, needs, experiences, and contributions to families and society. The session highlighted that ageing is a natural stage of life and that older persons should be able to live with dignity, independence, safety, and appropriate care.
Key issues discussed during the awareness session included:
Importance of regular health check-ups among older persons.
Early detection of lifestyle-related diseases, and Medication adherence.
Importance of Physical activity, proper nutrition
Mental and emotional well-being of older persons.
Importance of family support and social interaction.
Prevention of isolation and neglect among elderly persons.
Free Geriatric Health Check-Up: The initiative aimed to provide accessible preventive healthcare services to older persons and identify health concerns that may require further medical attention. The beneficiaries underwent general health assessment and were provided appropriate health guidance based on their individual needs and free Medicines were provided. Participants were encouraged to continue regular medical consultations and follow recommended treatment and lifestyle practices. Those requiring further evaluation were referred to KBN Teaching and General Hospital.
Free Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus Screening: Considering the importance of early detection and management of common non-communicable diseases among older adults, free screening for hypertension and diabetes mellitus was conducted during the Program. Participants with abnormal or concerning readings were advised to seek appropriate medical evaluation and follow-up and were referred to KBN Teaching and General Hospital for further evaluation.
Fruit Distribution: As part of the Program, fruits were distributed to the participating older persons. The activity was intended to promote awareness about healthy food choices and the importance of adequate nutrition during old age. The beneficiaries were encouraged to include a variety of nutritious foods in their daily diet, taking into account their individual health conditions and dietary requirements.
Conclusion: The celebration of International Day of Older Persons 2026 provided an opportunity to draw attention to older person’s healthcare and support needs. The Program successfully combined health services with awareness and community engagement. The event reinforced the message that every older person deserves to live a life with dignity, respect, good health, security, care, and social inclusion. More than 100 older persons benefitted from the program.
