Day 1: Inauguration of Anti-Ragging Week 2026 at Khaja Bandanawaz University
1. Introduction
Khaja Bandanawaz University (KBNU), Kalaburagi, organized Anti-Ragging Week 2026 from 12th to 18th August 2026 with the objective of creating awareness among students regarding the harmful effects of ragging and promoting a safe, inclusive, respectful and student-friendly campus environment.
The week-long initiative was conceived as an important student-welfare activity to reinforce the University's commitment towards student safety, dignity, empathy, mutual respect and responsible behaviour. The programme included a series of awareness-oriented and participatory activities such as an inaugural ceremony, awareness sessions, painting competition, walkathon, oath-taking ceremony and other creative activities.
The theme of the initiative was reflected in the University's commitment to ensuring that every student entering the KBNU campus feels safe, valued, respected and welcomed. The programme emphasized that seniority should be expressed through mentorship and leadership rather than intimidation or harassment.
2. Objectives of Anti-Ragging Week
The major objectives of Anti-Ragging Week 2026 were:
To create awareness among students about the consequences and harmful effects of ragging.
To promote a ragging-free campus environment.
To sensitize students about the importance of dignity, empathy and mutual respect.
To encourage healthy interaction between senior and junior students.
To promote mentorship, friendship and cooperation instead of intimidation.
To familiarize students with the University's commitment towards student safety and welfare.
To encourage students to speak against ragging and report incidents without fear.
To use creative and participatory activities as effective tools for anti-ragging awareness.
To reinforce responsible behaviour and discipline among students.
To strengthen the University's institutional mechanisms for prevention of ragging.
3. Inaugural Ceremony
The Anti-Ragging Week 2026 was formally inaugurated on 12th August 2026 at the Anatomy Lecture Hall, KBNU Campus, Kalaburagi. The inaugural programme brought together University authorities, faculty members, staff members and students.
The programme commenced with a respectful remembrance of the University's beloved former Chancellor, Hazrat Syed Shah Khusro Hussaini, whose vision, wisdom and commitment to the institution were acknowledged during the opening ceremony.
The gathering also sought the blessings and guidance of the present Chancellor, His Excellency Janab Syed Muhammad Ali Al-Hussaini, under whose guidance the University continues to emphasize academic excellence together with humanity, compassion and dignity.
The opening reflected the University's philosophy of “Educating Humanity” and set an appropriate tone for a programme focused on student dignity and welfare.
4. Welcome Address
Dr. N. M. Maroof, Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering and Assistant Dean, Student Welfare, Delivered the welcome address. He welcomed the dignitaries, faculty members, staff and students and highlighted the significance of Anti-Ragging Week as an institutional initiative aimed at creating a safe and positive educational environment.
5. Presentation of Week-Long Programme
Dr. Geetanjali Jeevanagi, Assistant Dean, Student Welfare, presented an overview of the activities planned during Anti-Ragging Week.
The week was designed to combine awareness, interaction and creativity. The planned activities included:
Awareness and sensitization programmes
Painting/creative competition
Walkathon
Oath-taking ceremony
Awareness through audio-visual presentations
Other student-oriented creative activities
The programme schedule was designed to ensure active participation and engagement of students throughout the week.
6. Address by Student Counsellor
Miss Aswathy N., Student Counsellor, KBNU, addressed the students on the significance of maintaining a ragging-free campus.
The session focused on the importance of creating an atmosphere in which students can interact with one another without fear, discrimination or intimidation. The counselling perspective added an important psychological and student-support dimension to the Anti-Ragging Week initiative.
Students were encouraged to understand that a healthy campus culture is based on mutual respect, emotional sensitivity, friendship, cooperation and responsible conduct.
7. Address by the Registrar
Mr. Mir Vilayat Ali, Registrar, Khaja Bandanawaz University, addressed the gathering. The Registrar emphasized the University's commitment to maintaining a safe and disciplined campus and highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in preventing ragging.
The address reinforced the message that student welfare is an integral part of the University's educational mission and that all members of the University community have a role to play in ensuring a positive learning environment.
8. Address by the Pro-Vice Chancellor
Prof. Syed Ashfaq Ahmed, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Khaja Bandanawaz University, addressed the gathering. His address provided institutional leadership to the Anti-Ragging Week initiative and reaffirmed the University's commitment to student safety, dignity and welfare.
The address served as an important message to the students that the University considers the prevention of ragging a serious responsibility and seeks to create an environment in which students can pursue their education with confidence and security.
9. Screening of UGC Anti-Ragging Awareness Videos
The participants were shown a series of official UGC Anti-Ragging awareness videos. The audio-visual presentation was intended to sensitize students to the seriousness of ragging and its consequences. The screening provided students with a visual and informative understanding of the issue and complemented the addresses delivered by the University authorities. The use of official awareness material also strengthened the educational component of the programme.
10. Vote of Thanks
Dr. Jibran Anwar, Nodal Officer, Anti-Ragging Cell, KBNU and Assistant Professor, Department of Anesthesiology, proposed the vote of thanks. He expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, University authorities, faculty members, staff, organizing committee and students for their participation and support in making the inaugural programme successful.
11. Seminar on Ragging and Its Impacts on Victims”
As part of the Anti-Ragging Week 2026 activities organized by Khaja Bandanawaz University (KBNU), Kalaburagi, a sensitization seminar on “Ragging and Its Impacts on Victims” was conducted to create awareness among students about the seriousness of ragging and its potential consequences on the physical, psychological, emotional and academic well-being of victims.
The seminar was delivered by Mrs. Mahalakshmi R. D., Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law, Khaja Bandanawaz University. With her academic background in law, she provided students with an informative perspective on ragging, emphasizing that ragging should not be viewed as a harmless form of student interaction, entertainment or initiation. Rather, any act that causes humiliation, intimidation, harassment, mental distress or physical discomfort to another student can have serious consequences.
During the seminar, Mrs. Mahalakshmi R. D. sensitized the students about the nature and seriousness of ragging and encouraged them to recognize unacceptable behaviour at an early stage. She explained that ragging may take different forms, including verbal humiliation, intimidation, inappropriate questioning, forced activities, harassment, threats, physical acts and other forms of behaviour that violate the dignity and personal boundaries of students.
