CPD Programme: AI Driven Surgery: Enhancing Outcomes through Technology
The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) titled “AI Driven Surgery: Enhancing Outcomes through Technology” was conducted by the Department of General Surgery, Khaja Bandanawaz University, on 22nd August 2026 at the Lecture Hall, 3rd Floor, KBN Teaching & General Hospital (KBNT&GH), Kalaburagi, bringing together surgeons, physicians, academicians, postgraduate residents, and medical students to deliberate upon the growing role of artificial intelligence and digital technology in modern surgical practice. The programme commenced with wishes and blessings from His Holiness Dr. Syed Muhammad Ali al-Hussaini Saheb, SajjadaNashin, Dargah Hazrath Khaja Bandanawaz (Rh), His Excellency The Chancellor, Khaja Bandanawaz University and Hon'ble President, Khaja Education Society.

Welcome address was given by Dr. M. A. Baseer, Professor & Head, Department of General Surgery, Khaja Bandanawaz University & Organising Chairman.
The CPD commenced by a short talk on the introduction and objectives of the programme by Dr. M. A. Baseer, Professor & Head, Department of General Surgery, Khaja Bandanawaz University & Organising Chairman, who outlined the aim of sensitising the surgical fraternity to the expanding applications of artificial intelligence across the continuum of surgical care and encouraged participants, particularly postgraduate residents and interns, to responsibly integrate emerging technologies into everyday clinical practice.
The scientific proceedings began with a session on “Introduction to the World of AI in Surgery” by Prof. Ruksar Fatima, Professor & Head, AI & Computer Sciences, KBNU-FET, followed by a keynote address on “Bird's Eye View of AI and Digital Technology” was delivered by Prof. Dr. S V Kulkarni, Dean, ICAIM (Indian College of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, Kolkata, after which the formal Inauguration Ceremony was held, followed by a tea break.
The post-inaugural session featured various talks as below:
“The Future of Artificial Intelligence in Surgery & Nano Technology”-Dr. Chetan Dhandore, Plastic Surgeon, Ashwini Medical College, Solapur
“Artificial Intelligence in the Operating Room – AI-Assisted Robotic Surgery: Present & Future”-Dr. Bharat Nara, Head Gastroenterologist, Apollo Hospital, Hyderabad
“How do I use AI in my Practice?”-Dr. Gurunath Parle, Cardiologist, Spandan Cardiac & Gastro Clinic, Solapur, who shared practical, real-world insights on integrating AI tools into everyday clinical decision-making.
The afternoon session covered:
“AI in Uro-Gynaec Surgery”-Dr. Madhuri V Joshi, Uro Gynaecologist, Faculty, ICAIM, Kolkata
“AI in Paediatric Surgery: Current Applications & Future Directions”-Dr. Nandkishor Shinde, Pediatric Surgeon, MIMSR Medical College, Latur, Maharashtra, broadening the scope of the discussion on artificial intelligence well beyond general surgery to allied surgical and medical specialities.
Quiz was also conducted at the end of the scientific sessions involving the 4 medical colleges of Kalaburagi, having4 membersin each team. The quiz offered a spirited and competitive conclusion to the day's academic proceedings while reinforcing the concepts of AI in surgery covered through the sessions.MahadevappaRampure Medical College, Kalaburagi emerged as the quiz winner.
The CPD was attended by 303delegates which included the faculty, PGs& UGsof KBNU-FOMS & other colleges in Karnataka & outside Karnataka, who actively took part in the scientific sessions and the quiz competition.
