Community Outreach Programme for World Diabetes Day

World Diabetes Day is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about diabetes, its impact, and preventive measures. Given the alarming prevalence of diabetes in India, which ranks second globally with 74.2 million diabetics, and the growing concern across Southeast Asia, the Department of Food and Nutrition and the Department of Sociology at KBN University collaborated to organize a community outreach program. This initiative aimed to address the challenges of diabetes through education, health services, and community engagement.


Objectives

  1. To provide free health checkups, including Random Blood Glucose (RBG) tests and Blood Pressure (BP) monitoring. 

  2. To deliver dietary counselingtailored to both diabetic and non-diabetic individuals and to register dietary intake patterns of villagers

  3. To conduct a social survey to understand the community's awareness and challenges regarding diabetes. 

  4. To provide students with practical experience in community outreach and interdisciplinary collaboration.


Program Highlights

The event, held on 16th November 2024, was conducted at Aurad village, Kalaburagi district. The program included the following activities: 


1. Health Checkups:

  • Free RBG testing and BP monitoring services were provided to the villagers

  • Participants were informed about their health status and advised on the importance of regular monitoring by intern doctors of KBNTGH


2. Dietary Counseling:

  • Students from the Department of Food and Nutrition provided personalized guidance on healthy eating habits. 

  • Awareness on managing diabetes through diet, lifestyle changes, and physical activity was emphasized. 


3. Social Survey:

  • The Department of Sociology conducted a survey to assess community knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to diabetes. 

  • Insights were gathered to identify gaps in awareness and resources available to the villagers. 


Outcomes

1. Participant Engagement:

   The response from the villagers was overwhelmingly positive. The community expressed gratitude for the free services and education provided. 

2. Student Learning Experience:

   Students from both departments gained valuable hands-on experience in organizing and implementing community outreach programs. They enhanced their skills in health education, survey techniques, and interpersonal communication. 

 

Conclusion

The collaborative effort between the Department of Food and Nutrition and the Department of Sociology was instrumental in making the World Diabetes Day observance impactful. The event not only empowered the community of Aurad village but also provided KBN University students with a platform for experiential learning and societal contribution. This initiative serves as a model for future interdisciplinary outreach programs aimed at addressing pressing public health issues.
